PHOTO BY CLINT TRAHAN The comparisons to softer brands were inevitable as soon as pictures emerged of Price skating in a clandes-tine all-white set over the summer, and goalies immediately picked up on the addition of knee rolls. The big difference, though, is much lower down the CCM pad. The boot break in the Extreme Flex Pro is significantly softer and flatter than the Reebok P4. That increase in flexibility extends across the face of the pad as well, with noticeably more twisting – or torsional – flex in the new CCM that increased even more with break-in time. Not that it takes long to notice the additional flex at the boot. Price was 20 minutes into a session with his new set when InGoal asked if he could point the toe. He flexed it out almost two inches, something many goalies like because it gives them additional re-bound control low on the pad. The result of that added flex is a pad that feels more connected to the leg at the skate and up the shin. Unlike stiffer Reebok models, which sit up on the skate, you can actually feel the in-side of the CCM pad on the laces and up against the lower shin, which is exactly how Price likes it. “It feels like it is resting there and more a part of my leg,” Price said. “As far as comfort, for me I really like to feel the pad is part of my body.” It’s a feeling accentuated by Price’s preferred leg channel and inner calf wrap, which are both standard on the Extreme Flex series. His inner calf wrap is inset more from the outer edge of the 4 / INGOAL MAGAZINE MARCH 2013
